20.4.10
Arcolinuxb isos
All ArcoLinuxB isos will boot into the desktop of choice except for qtile and deepin
We started experimenting with Plasma to fix an issue. The solution was to boot immediately into its own desktop.
As a result all ArcoLinuxB isos are now booting in their own desktop.
Xfce is no longer used as the transfer mechanism.
i3wm will have an error message in the panel on a live usb – after installation the panel will work
Start with any iso and install any desktop
We have been working on our ArcoLinux Tweak Tool.
The desktop installer has been improved so you can install our 15 desktops on your system. Deepin has conflicting packages and has to be treated manually only if there are conflicts in packages. It all depends on the choices of the desktops.
20.4.9
Building of all isos
All isos have been built with Xfce as the pass-through mechanism to deliver the OS.
20.4.1-8
Arcolinux iso – changes in the package list
We have removed the following packages from the ArcoLinux iso
- glances
- powertop
- vnstat
- breeze and its dependencies
- breeze-icons
- xfce4-screensaver
- glxinfo
- python-qt
You can install those packages again from Calamares.
ArcoLinuxB – changes in the package list
We have removed the following package from all ArcoLinuxB isos:
- arcolinux-arc-themes-nico-git
- sublime-text-dev
- meld
- the_platinum_searcher-bin
We have added the following package on the ArcoLinuxB Plasma iso:
- cryfs – needed for vault
We have removed the following package on the ArcoLinuxB Xfce iso:
- xfburn
- xfce4-screensaver
Switch from breeze to bibata cursor
We had changed our package from xcursor-breeze to breeze. With breeze came a lot of dependencies in our 15 desktops. To make things worse there were several large updates in the month of March.
Hence we have decided to forego the package breeze (not on Plasma) and we will have bibata ice cursor as the default cursor now.
During Calamares you can decide whether you want to install xcursor-breeze or breeze as package. We believe in freedom of choice.
xcursor-breeze and breeze will always conflict
The reason for the conflict lies in pacman and how Arch Linux makes the packages.
Communication software
Because of the corona crisis we focused first on communication applications.
How can we keep in touch with colleagues, friends and family?
We came up with this shortlist of applications to choose from :
- arcolinux-teamviewer – youtube
- discord – youtube
- krdc
- qtox
- remmina
- riot-desktop
- skypeforlinux-stable-bin – youtube
- slack-desktop – youtube
- teams
- telegram-desktop – youtube
- tigervnc
- viber – youtube
- whatsapp – youtube
- wire-desktop
- zoom – youtube
We have also included here software to remotely control a computer in order to facilitate communication.
Calamares 3.2.20
Calamares is our graphical installer. We use now the version 3.2.20. You can read more about this version on the github of Calamares.
Getting to know all the linux software
In Calamares we can now select a great variety of software applications.
It is now time to brush up your knowledge of all these applications.
All the packages, you can install now via Calamares, are now coming from the ArcoLinux repos, if they were only available from AUR in the past.
Calamares on ArcoLinux – Choose your applications in Calamares
Choose your applications in an orderly fashion.
Every screen will organize the packages logically.
- hardware related
- communication software
- development software
- office software
- multimedia software
- internet software
- theming software
- games software
- utilities software
- multiple categories
- software for ArcoLinux developers and betatesters
Xfce4-screensaver out
ArcoLinux has worked without xfce-screensaver for years. After adding this package to our package list we experienced screens turning black without any reason at the most ackward moments. When moving the mouse the screen would wake up again. It was just annoying. Removing this package was the sensible thing to do.
hiding electron on xfce
On Xfce you can hide applications that are not suitable for this desktop. The flagship has Openbox and i3 onboard. We hide applications that do not concern Xfce. Electron is an application that has many versions (so many icons in our menus). It is a back-end to other applications. We do not need to see it in our menus.
Arcolinux-kvantum
We have added octopi, octopi-notifier, imagewriter, keepassxc applications to look nice with the kvantum theme manager.
Gnome and Budgie keyboard fix
Gnome and Budgie work with dconf as a central database to save all its settings. We only see the keyboard, you selected in Calamares, in the settings.
ArcoLinux -welcome-app
Arch Linux creates their packages on the basis of pkgbuilds. Some of these packages will conflict with others because they provide the same files and folders under a different package name. We have created an extra icon to remind us of the possible conflicts.
Arcolinux-teamviewer
Teamviewer is a great way to remotely take over the computer. You can assist anyone and take over control of the computer if they too have teamviewer installed on Windows, Mac or Linux.
We created our own package as the setup is quite technical and we do not want any frustrations for our users.
arcolinux-teamviewer works out of the box
Arcolinux-tweak-tool
We have further improved our ArcoLinux Tweak Tool.
Autostart has improved in usability.
Desktop installer will install a more complete list of packages needed for a great experience in every desktop.
Since this tool is started up as ‘root’ we had to create all kinds of workarounds to perform actions as ‘user’.
Sardi and Surfn icons
With all the extra software we now host on our own ArcoLinux repos we needed to create the missing icons.
20.3.4
volumeicon
Volumeicon was lost when comparing the isos – Volumeicon is useful in openbox and i3 – added back to the ArcoLinux iso, where it was missing.
20.3.3
20.3.2
20.3.1
20.2.12
ArcoLinux Tweak Tool
The ArcoLinux Tweak Tool is created to have easy access to features that now require manual editing of settings in files.
We will update this article every time we release a new version of the tool.
Because of the ArcoLinux Tweak Tool some of our packages got an update:
- arcolinux-termite-themes – arcolinux-default theme + arcolinux-passion-dark-trans theme
- arcolinux-grub-theme-vimix-git – more wallpapers to choose from + update from github
CTRL + ALT + E
ArcoLinux Welcome App
The ArcoLinux Welcome App is created to guide ArcoLinux users during the installation procedure. The advice is to first erase any partition and formatting with Gparted and then proceed with the Calamares installer.
After installation the app is still available to link to important webpages for ArcoLinux and also link to the ArcoLinux Tweak Tool.

ArcoLinuxD follows the numbering and has the following differences with the earlier version
- linux kernel
- linux-firmware
- sardi icons
- surfn icons
20.2.11
Keyboard shortcuts for ArcoLinux apps
Xfce, Openbox and i3 have now a keyboard shortcut to
ArcoLinux Welcome App – CTRL + ALT + W
ArcoLinux Tweak Tool – CTRL + ALT + E
Install these applications
sudo pacman -S dex sudo pacman -S arcolinux-welcome-app-git sudo pacman -S arcolinux-tweak-tool-git
The apps are set to floating on Tiling Window Managers if possible.
All desktops have been changed to have these keyboard shortcuts. It may mean that we have overwritten the keyboard shortcut that was already in place.
20.2.10
awesome
We will gradually go over all the tiling window managers.
ArcoLinux-Welcome-App will be launched automatically at start.
Keyboard shortcut will become CTRL + ALT + W.
The app will float if possible.
The application Dex has been installed on the isos. With this application we launch our ArcoLinux Welcome App.
Calamares
ArcoLinuxD gets a new Calamares configuration.
If a user would only install Qtile or Xmonad the icons for the workspaces would be missing. We added the awesome font to the list.
On Xmonad we have added arcolinux-oblogout and arcolinux-oblogout-themes-git to be able to logout.
20.2.9
ArcoLinux Welcome App
Thanks to the efforts of Brad Heffernan we now have an ArcoLinux Welcome App.
It will give you an immediate overview of all the information that matters for our distribution.
The app will start on a live usb with the message to use gparted to clean your system prior to installing ArcoLinux with Calamares. Many issues (read frustrations) can be avoided, if you let your Linux system start with a clean slate. There will be a reminder to start Calamares only if you have internet.
No internet connection means no extra software installed via Calamares.
After the installation the app will greet you. Then you explore the links provided. Please join us on one of our social media channels like telegram (casual talk) or Discord (only ArcoLinux and technical).
If you do not want to autostart it again next time, then there is a selection box at the bottom right to do so.
DURING LIVE SESSION
MESSAGE IF NO INTERNET TO ALERT USER
AFTER REBOOT
PLASMA
A new package was created to provide the kservices of Dolphin i.e. arcolinux-plasma-kservices-git.
Certain services (right mouse click or context menu) will be made available to the user that way:
- change png to jpg
- compare with meld
- set as wallpaper on a jpg/png image
PLASMA
Dolphin got some practical shortcuts on the toolbar;
- up arrow to navigate
- create a folder
- open a terminal in current folder
PLASMA
We have tried to make the Plasma menu as small as possible by default.
ArcoLinux
ArcoLinux is still our flagship. It will contain our 3 browsers, gimp, inkscape, … to be able to develop ArcoLinux. If you do not select any additional software you will get the same iso as last month. You can not remove software. If you want less software we have ArcoLinuxD and ArcoLinuxB.
Our flagship becomes a cruiseship
Internet is required
With the latest version of Calamares you have the freedom to choose what packages to install on the fly. Internet is required.
You can select if you want a different kernel or decide to install nvidia packages.
You can decide to install the microcode.
You select any of the additional software from the list.
We have created an ArcoLinux-meta-steam package to install steam the efficient way.
We have created an ArcoLinux-meta-fun package to install all the packages from our “fun” script.
Choose either Libre Office Fresh or Libre Office Still.
Choose either Virtualbox for linux or linux-lts kernel.
If you change the language in Calamares, you will also change the language of Libre Office.
ArcoLinuxD
ArcoLinuxD became the most minimal iso. If you do not install any packages, it is the most bare version we have and it can give you the Arch Linux look and feel.
There is no
- bluetooth
- printers
- sound
You will still need to install those with our scripts from the ArcoLinuxD githubs. That does not change.
With the latest version of Calamares you have the freedom to choose what packages to install on the fly. Internet is required.
You can select if you want a different kernel or decide to install nvidia packages.
You can decide to install the microcode.
As extra option you can also use one of 4 available display managers
- lightdm
- sddm
- gdm
- lxdm
After reboot you end up in a black screen and you enable the one you selected with a command.
sudo systemctl enable lightdm
sudo systemctl enable sddm
sudo systemctl enable gdm
sudo systemctl enable lxdm
skel
Skel is essential for Tiling Window Managers as the code for the desktop is still in /etc/skel.
then you reboot and you will boot into a graphical environment.
sudo reboot
You select any of the additional software from the list.
We have created an ArcoLinux-meta-steam package to install steam the efficient way.
We have created an ArcoLinux-meta-fun package to install all the packages from our “fun” script.
Choose either Libre Office Fresh or Libre Office Still.
Choose either Virtualbox for linux or linux-lts kernel.
If you change the language in Calamares, you will also change the language of Libre Office
Internet connection required
ArcoLinuxB
ArcoLinuxB is the iso that you can either build or download.
You can edit the package list, build the iso and make a personal edition of any of our desktops.
You can choose between 15 desktops at the moment.
We do not talk about full isos and minimal isos anymore.
All ArcoLinuxB isos are minimal isos.
However we did not cut down on ‘comfort’ applications like bluetooth, printers, sound and video.
Furthermore we require 3 tools on all isos for development reasons :
- Firefox
- Sublime-Text-Dev
- Meld
Option 1 : download
During installation you can select additional packages to install. Internet connection is required.
If you change the language in Calamares, you will also change the language of Libre Office
Option 2 : build
If you intend to build, then any package can be added or removed from the package list file. Anything is possible. You can combine different desktops on one iso for example.
The bulk of the applications in Calamares is the same on all ArcoLinuxB isos. There are always exceptions. Openbox will contain Geany by default because the menu is using Geany to open your openbox configuration files. So Geany will NOT show up in the list in Calamares. It is already installed.
Anything default installed with the iso is not in the Calamares list.
ArcoLinuxB Plasma undergoes a big change.
ArcoLinuxB Plasma measures only 1.7 GB.
Previous full version of Plasma was 2.7 GB and minimal was 2 GB.
During installation you can add more meta packages to your installation or you build the iso the way you want it.
Changes to all ArcoLinuxB isos
All ArcoLinuxB isos will have the following things in common at start up
- no plank and configs from ArcoLinux
- meld installed
- sublime-text-dev installed
- firefox installed
- lshw installed
- tmux installed
- dmenu installed
- hwinfo installed
- zsh installed on all isos including extra packages
- volumeicon is installed on all tiling window managers
- geany only installed on Openbox and Xtended by default
- thunar and its packages installed
- gnome-disk-utility installed – just not on plasma
We start with a minimal ArcoLinuxB iso and we install our extra software with the help of Calamares.
20.2.8
Plasma
SDDM is installed facilitating an easy switch from lightdm to sddm if the user likes to change. Standard we will use lightdm on all our desktops.
sudo systemctl enable -f sddm.service
Herbstluftwm
It is now possible to assign applications to workspaces. We have used the same logic in all our tiling window managers. It is standard not active.
workspace 1 – browsers
workspace 2 – editors
…
There is also a new menu you can use at your convenience.
Qtile
It is now possible to assign applications to workspaces. We have used the same logic in all our tiling window managers. It is standard not active.
workspace 1 – browsers
workspace 2 – editors
…
Xmonad
Added volumeicon to startup – easy access to volume level and Pulse Audio Volume Control or pavucontrol.
We added a pacman.hook in order to rebuild xmonad if updates come in. If users forget to recompile xmonad these days then they will not be able to login. See solution here.
Both config for polybar and xmobar have been adapted.
Variety needs to autostart
As it turns out we do need variety to autostart so it can set a wallpaper on the odd occasions the desktops can not. Including our live dvd.
Xfce4 will not set a wallpaper on a screen it does not recognize. Variety will always apply the missing setting.
Calamares config change
Changed the sequence of the modules for shellprocess – now same as on ArcoLinuxD
Also bumped number on ArcoLinuxD to follow the numbering
Should have no impact – no real difference between 20.2.7
ArcoLinuxB Xfce creation.
Meld between ArcoLinux, ArcoLinuxD, ArcoLinuxB Xfce, ArcoLinuxB Xfce Minimal and ArcoLinuxB Xfce Bare makes it necessary to re-organize the packages file. New number for the iso is a way to check if no mistakes were made by comparing the packages list files of new and old version.
Python-pyparted was updated. A package required for Mintstick. That is the default application we use to burn isos.
20.2.7
Move from development to stable
Applying major changes to stable branch
20.2.6
General changes
Variety installed on your system will NOT start automatically. You can quickly change to the next wallpaper with Alt + n and variety will load and change the wallpaper. The user decides whether to set variety to autostart next time or not. That results in setting the wallpaper with nitrogen in Openbox and with feh in i3. Packages have been updated.
Plank and its themes are installed on your system but will not autostart at boot on Xfce. The user decides whether he/she wants to start it up at boot. Plank is started on Openbox. The user decides this in the openbox config. i3 does not require Plank. Dmenu is our default menu.
The arcoLinux-config-git package is back on the iso. By omitting the package from the iso of 20.2.5 we decided we can live without plank and variety autostarting. The autostart files have been deleted from this package.
20.2.5
Calamares improvement for arcolinux iso
We have choosen to go forward with the kpmcore-git package as a backend for the partition creation.
Delete all partititons with gparted and then install ArcoLinux with Calamares.
Much more applications can now be installed via Calamares.
Calamares improvement for arcolinuxd iso
We have choosen kpmcore-git package as a backend for partition creation.
Delete all partititons with gparted and then install ArcoLinux with Calamares.
Many more applications can now be installed via Calamares.
We have deleted more left-overs from the Xfce delivery system giving the user a more Arch Linux feel after installing any desktop.
20.2.4
Calamares improvement
More packages have been added to the list in Calamares.
The user has more installation choices.
20.2.3
arcolinux-root-git
Pkgbuild for this package was upgraded. We do not need .bashrc-latest anymore to overcome building issues.
The alias “cb” has been changed to a shorter version.
When you “update” your system and you did a “skel”, logout to apply the new bashrc with the new “cb”.
20.2.2
arcolinux-local-applications-git
This package is a desktop trick for Xfce only. We add or remove applications from the menu and the xfce settings with it.
These solutions are no longer necessary and have been deleted.
- elinks
- cmake-gui
- electron
20.2.1
Calamares improvement
New Calamares backend – kpmcore-git
Lxqt packages list
We added the following packages to the iso
- lximage-qt
- trojita
- qpdfview
- obconqt
We remove the following packages from the iso
- evolution
Xmonad volumeicon
Polybar will get an icon in its polybar. The application is called volumeicon. You can set more complex elements like recording and selecting bluetooth devices.
Xmonad – recompile xmonad automatically
Xmonad is actually an application that is running. When updates come in, you are sometimes stuck at the lightdm login screen because you forgot to recompile Xmonad before rebooting. Solution to this issue is described here.
With our solution we hope this issue is in the past.
A pacman hook is going to recompile xmonad when an update is coming in.
Qtile assign applications to workspaces
We have added code to be able to assign applications to specific workspaces.
Browsers on 1, editors on 2, etc..
Budgie Wallpaper
Budgie will start with the standard wallpaper of ArcoLinux.
Budgie Super + X
The keyboard shortcut to shutdown the desktop was missing in Budgie.
Deepin Wallpaper
Deepin will start with the standard wallpaper of ArcoLinux.
VARIETY HAS BEEN UPDATED TO 0.8.2-1
We have changed our configuration to follow the new release.
Variety is started at boot.
Variety will NOT change your wallpaper. Not on start and not after x minutes.
Only /usr/share/backgrounds is there as the source for wallpapers.
Desktoppr is back as source. We leave it up to the user to activate it.
We have added several issues on the github of variety. We have asked for support for these desktops to change the desktop wallpaper without using our ArcoLinux solutions.
- awesome
- jwm
- herbstluftwm
- qtile
- xmonad
As a result the next variety release will support them out of the box.
GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS
Packages added to the iso
- archiso
- arcolinux-zsh-git
- oh-my-zsh-git
- breeze (cursor)
- breeze-icons
Packages remved from the iso
- xcursor-breeze
- oxygen neo
20.1.4
New conky with “powered by ArcoLinux” sticker created by zver43
We have created a new conky to show this powered by ArcoLinux sticker. Also for plasma package.
New xfce setting to center windows
Calamares no longer centers itself when booting up. We will change a setting in Xfce so that any new window centers itself in this desktop. There has been a github commit on calamares regarding the issue. This is the proposed solution.
Herbstluftwm
Several keybindings for herbstluftwm have moved to sxhkd file.
Awesome
Changed text in menu of awesome – more clarity by also omitting some menus.
F12 dropdown terminal does not tile any more.
Border color for focused windows is blue.
Xmonad
The F12 dropdown terminal will behave as a dropdown and not be tiled.
Multimedia buttons (play, stop, …) will not work for mpd but for spotify and other players.
Xmonad will also draw a blue line around a single window.
Arch Linux – Xorg cleaning
Arch Linux is cleaning out the xorg group package.
xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard have been deleted from the Arch Linux repos.
Carli continues – booting into plasma – Carli 4
The article about the goal and vision of Carli has been updated.
Lightdm wallpaper for plasma changed
Arcolinux websites makeover
We have taken a look at the database and amount of MB our websites take up. We have made our database and our images smaller. As a result it might be that you are visiting a page where there is an image missing.
Report a missing image and we will fix it.
We can not visit every page on our websites.
It does not weigh up against the amount of webspace we have saved by this actions. Some are now half the size they were last year.
A big thank you goes to our revision-team, who give me corrections for grammar and spelling.
Improvements concerning all the sites
- consistency in home page
- homepage – gets list of the latetst articles
- start here menu is consistently present
- start here is built up as first start guide for the user – begin at top and end at bottom of menu
- there is just one gallery – only on arcolinux.info – others have been deleted – webspace reacquired
- choose your project is present on all websites – it is important to see the projects and the websites that support them
We emphasize the two major pages you should visit as a first user of ArcoLinux but also later you can revisit them
The last link – fast-track – is a new page. We will keep improving it over time.
Fast-track = concentrated ArcoLinux and Arch Linux knowledge
The who page has been updated to show the ArcoLinux Team.
Use the listing menu in all our websites to do a quick search or perform a quick overview of the content available.

20.1.3
FUN SCRIPT – DNA
XFCE custom actions
We have added sha256 checksum to our context menu in thunar.
Install latest linux kernel
We have added the possibility to install also the latest linux kernel.
When we build the iso, it will contain the latest linux kernel but not after several weeks.
We give the user now the possibility to try out at 2 linux kernels either the one from the iso or the very latest from the net.
Build script provides two extra files
We have added a few lines in the build script.
As a result you will get two extra files
- a list of all the packages on the iso and their version
- a checksum file containing
- sha1
- sha256
- md5
20.1.2
microcode or amd-ucode and intel-ucode
We changed the calamares configuration to include the choice to install either intel-ucode or amd-ucode.
Read on Arch Wiki microcode for more info.
If you are planning on a dualboot, you may have to manually edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg to include initramfs-linux.img IF you are installing the microcode. It is the user’s choice now.
Calamares is programmed to delete the microcode that you do not need even if you select it. For example on an intel cpu, you can select amd-ucode but it will be removed later on.
20.1.1
Calamares 3.2.17.1 and choose what to install
We have eliminated the nvidia module from calamares and went completely for the netinstall module to install
- linux lts kernel
- nvidia with linux kernel
