ArcoLinux Recommends Systemd-boot Over GRUB and rEFInd
As the Linux ecosystem continues to evolve, ArcoLinux has made a strategic decision to recommend systemd-boot as the preferred boot manager over traditional options like GRUB and rEFInd. This recommendation is based on several technical and practical advantages that align with the project’s philosophy of providing a streamlined and efficient user experience.
Why Systemd-boot?
Systemd-boot, formerly known as gummiboot, is a lightweight, straightforward boot manager designed specifically for UEFI-based systems. It integrates seamlessly with systemd, which is already a core component of modern Linux distributions, including ArcoLinux. The key reasons for this recommendation include:
1. Simplicity and Minimalism
-
Unlike GRUB, which comes with extensive features and complexity, systemd-boot is lightweight and minimal.
-
Its configuration files are easy to manage, requiring only a few lines in
/boot/loader/entries/
.
2. Better Integration with UEFI
-
Systemd-boot is explicitly designed for UEFI systems, making it a native solution without unnecessary legacy components.
-
It takes advantage of the firmware’s native boot capabilities rather than implementing its own, reducing compatibility issues.
3. Ease of Maintenance
-
Unlike GRUB, which requires regenerating the configuration with
grub-mkconfig
, systemd-boot simply loads entries from the/boot/loader/entries/
directory. -
Updates are straightforward and less prone to breakage compared to GRUB, which has had numerous issues with updates leading to unbootable systems.
4. Security Benefits
-
Systemd-boot aligns well with Secure Boot policies.
-
It works well with signed kernel images (
sbctl
) for users concerned with boot security.
5. Faster Boot Times
-
Due to its lightweight nature, systemd-boot provides a faster boot experience compared to GRUB or rEFInd.
-
It eliminates the need for unnecessary modules and processing steps.
ArcoLinux Forum has been retired
ArcoLinux Forum Has Been Retired – Join Us on Discord for Support!
We are making an important change to our support channels. As of now, the ArcoLinux Forum has been officially retired. After careful consideration, we have decided to move all our support discussions and community interactions to Discord.
Why the Change?
The landscape of online communication has evolved, and we believe that Discord provides a more dynamic, responsive, and interactive environment for our users. Here’s why we made the switch:
- Faster Responses: Our community and team members are more active on Discord, meaning you’ll get support more quickly.
- Real-time Discussion: Unlike a traditional forum, Discord allows live chat discussions, making problem-solving more efficient.
- Improved Organization: With dedicated channels for different topics, it’s easier to find the help you need.
- Stronger Community Interaction: Engage with other ArcoLinux users in a direct and collaborative way.

Spring Cleaning of Our Discord Server: A Fresh Start
Spring is a time for renewal, and we’ve taken this opportunity to refresh and simplify our Discord server. We know that over time, channels and categories can accumulate, making it harder to navigate and find the discussions that matter most. That’s why we’ve streamlined everything to enhance clarity and usability.
What’s New?
Simplified Channels: We’ve condensed and reorganized our channels to focus on the most essential topics, ensuring that conversations remain relevant and engaging.
Efficient Folders & Categories: Instead of a cluttered list of channels, we’ve grouped related topics into structured categories, making it easier to browse and participate.
Decluttering Unused Sections: Some channels that were rarely used have been removed to maintain a clean and efficient server.
Why the Change?
Our goal is to provide a better user experience. A well-organized Discord server makes it easier to find information, participate in discussions, and enjoy the community without feeling overwhelmed by too many options.
We Hope You Like the Simplicity
This update is all about making interactions smoother and more enjoyable. We’d love to hear your feedback—let us know what you think about the new structure! If you have suggestions, feel free to share them with us.
Thanks for being a part of our community!
Calamares
Calamares is a free, modular, and distribution-independent system installer that offers a smooth and customizable installation experience for Linux distributions. Our setup is based on the latest available code – 12/03/2025.
switch to easy installation
To iterate: If you encounter complications during the advanced installation because of Pacman errors, it’s advisable to switch to the easy installation method.
It’s important to note that these issues stem from Pacman, not the Calamares installer.
The easy installation process is dependable and will ensure a successful setup.
After restarting your system, you’ll find three options for managing your software:
– Sofirem: Provides an easy-to-use interface for installing or uninstalling software, mirroring the capabilities found in the advanced mode of Calamares.
– Custom Scripts: For those seeking a tailored setup, you can adapt the Arcolinux-Nemesis scripts to customize your system further.
– Pamac or Octopi: These tools offer a straightforward way to search, install, or remove software with just a few clicks.
However, this command will NOT inform you about the status of your system updates or verify their accuracy and completeness.
Monitoring and ensuring the update process is correctly completed remains your responsibility.
